Ghana officially the Republic of Ghana, is a country in West Africa.[9] It spans the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean to the south, sharing borders with the Ivory Coast in the west, Burkina Faso in the north, and Togo in the east. Ghana covers an area of 238,535 km2 (92,099 sq mi), spanning diverse biomes that range from coastal savannas to tropical rain forests. With over 31 million people, Ghana is the second-most populous country in West Africa, after Nigeria. The capital and largest city is Accra; other major cities are Kumasi, Tamale, and Sekondi-Takoradi.

Ghana’s economic freedom score is 59.8, making its economy the 89th freest in the 2022 Index. Ghana is ranked 9th among 47 countries in the Sub-Saharan Africa region, and its overall score is above the regional average but below the world average. Over the past five years, Ghana’s economic growth had been decelerating, but it turned upward in 2021.
Ghana’s rapid growth was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the March 2020 lockdown, and a sharp decline in commodity exports. The economy had grown at an average of 7 percent in 2017-19, before experiencing a sharp contraction in the second and third quarters of 2020.
The economic slowdown had a considerable impact on households. The poverty rate is estimated to have slightly increased from 25 percent in 2019 to 25.5 percent in 2020.
Ghana’s main exports are gold, cocoa beans and timber products. Others include tuna, aluminum, manganese ore, diamonds and horticulture. Its main exports partners are Netherlands, Burkina Faso, South Africa and United Kingdom
Ghana has a young age structure, with approximately 57% of the population under the age of 25 and 73 million youth are registered unemployed.
Ghana’s strategic plan is informed by the zero hunger strategic review and evaluations and is aligned with government policies, particularly the Coordinated Program of Economic and Social Development Policies (2017–2024), Planting for Food and Jobs and One District, One Warehouse.
